Getting started
Install CodeHerd, open a project and start your first agent.
Requirements
- A Mac with Apple Silicon running macOS 13 Ventura or later.
- At least one agent CLI installed, e.g. Claude Code, Codex CLI or Gemini CLI (see Agents). Your login shell always works too.
Install
- Download the .dmg and drag CodeHerd into Applications.
- Open it. The first time, macOS confirms it was downloaded from the internet; it is signed and notarised.
Updating
From 1.0.1, CodeHerd updates itself. It looks for a new version when it opens and once a day, downloads it in the background, and shows Restart to Update in the sidebar and in Settings → About, with what's new. It never restarts on its own; if you don't restart, the update is installed the next time you quit. To look now, choose Check for Updates… in the CodeHerd menu or the command menu (⌘K).
Only a copy in your Applications folder updates itself. CodeHerd 1.0.0 has no updater: quit it, download the latest .dmg and drag it over the old copy. Your projects, sessions and licence are kept.
Your first herd
- Click Open a project folder (or press ⌘O, or drop a folder on the window).
- Click Start a session and pick an agent. It starts in your project folder, in a real terminal.
- Press ⌘T to start a second agent in a pane of its own, ⌘D or ⇧⌘D to split, or ⇧⌘G for a 2×2 grid. Drag a pane by its title bar to move it.
- Move between panes with ⌥⌘ plus an arrow key, or zoom one with ⇧⌘↩.

What happens when you quit
Quitting stops every agent and everything it started. Next time, your projects and layouts come back and each pane shows how its session ended, with a one-click Restart. CodeHerd never restarts agents on its own.
